Nwaneri's move to the Ruhr region is his second loan spell in as many seasons, as he spent six months at Marseille in 2025/26. While there, the England Under-21 international scored two goals in nine Ligue 1 appearances before returning to Arsenal in June.

Since then, he has featured for Arsenal in several pre-season friendlies, notably scoring against his new club in the Emirates Cup

"With the loan of Ethan, we have managed to acquire a very talented and technically gifted midfielder," said  Dortmund 's sporting director Lars Ricken.

"Due to Giannis Konstantelias' extended absence, it was important for us to strengthen our squad again in the short term. For us, signing Ethan was the best possible sporting solution. We are delighted that we were able to complete this shortly before the end of the transfer window."

What happened

Highly-rated Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri has joined Borussia Dortmund on a temporary deal. The move follows Dortmund's recent loan signing of another young English player and reflects both Arsenal's willingness to send prospects abroad for senior minutes and Dortmund's strategy of cultivating emerging talent in the Bundesliga. Nwaneri, who became the youngest Premier League player in history at Arsenal, will look to accelerate his development with regular first-team football in Germany.

Chance analysis

Ethan Nwaneri's loan to Borussia Dortmund is a significant step in the development of one of English football's most exciting young prospects. By choosing the Bundesliga — renowned for its emphasis on giving young players meaningful minutes — over a domestic loan, Arsenal are signaling a clear pathway plan for the midfielder. Dortmund's appetite for young English talent continues a growing pipeline between the Premier League and Germany's top flight, and Nwaneri's adaptation there will be closely watched as a potential indicator of his readiness to break into Arsenal's first team.

Impact

Arsenal lose a promising academy player from their squad for the loan spell, while Borussia Dortmund add a high-upside young attacking option to their ranks.
