Former England striker on retiring from the Lionesses, being a role model, and taking on Chelsea in the WSL

A year after taking up golf, Rachel Daly has already reached a handicap of 19. “I think that’s too generous, I was playing really well in the summer,” she point outs before politely declaring that further questions about her pastimes are out of bounds. “I’m not that exciting, to be honest,” Daly says. “I walk the dogs, play golf. I don’t do a whole lot. I don’t lead a very exciting life.” Instead, Daly wants to talk about the new Women’s Super League season, which is more than fair enough.

Coincidentally, by next summer, 19 will be the number of seasons Daly has played at the top level, ever since breaking into Leeds’ first team as a 16-year-old in 2008, and therefore it feels reasonable to disagree with her view that a former Olympian, who played 84 times for England and was the WSL’s player of the season just three years ago, does not lead an exciting life. What happened

England international Rachel Daly, one of the most recognisable figures in the Women's Super League, explains how stepping back from the international stage and concentrating on her club career at Aston Villa has revitalised her approach. She frames the change as a positive, noting that club football is now her single professional focus rather than being split between club and country. The piece positions Daly as a leader within an Aston Villa side aiming to compete at the top end of the WSL, and reflects on the broader trend of experienced internationals prioritising domestic performance.

Chance analysis

Daly's remarks underline a growing pattern in the women's game: senior internationals deliberately channelling their energy into the WSL club season. For Aston Villa, having a player of her experience fully committed and unburdened by international travel is a meaningful boost in both dressing-room leadership and on-pitch output. The story also speaks to how the WSL has matured into a destination league in its own right, capable of holding the full attention of players who once balanced it as a secondary commitment.

Impact

Rachel Daly's renewed focus on Aston Villa is likely a modest positive for the club's WSL performances this season.
