Attributed to original sourceNicolò Tresoldi made clear why Italy want him so much by scoring a hat-trick for Club Brugge’s shock 4-3 victory, but Inter are on zero points after two Champions League games.
The Nerazzurri paid a heavy price for individual errors in the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid , so needed to be on their toes. Curtis Jones and John Stones were out injured, while Aleksandar Stankovic was again benched against the club where he won the Belgian title last season.
Club Brugge lost 3-2 to Aston Villa and saw Yann Sommer face his former team, along with potential Italy international hitman Nicolò Tresoldi, but Joel Ordonez missed out with a fractured metatarsal.

MILAN, ITALY – OCTOBER 13: Andy Diouf of FC Internazionale Milano has his shot saved by Yann Sommer of Club Brugge KV during the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 League Phase MD2 match between FC Internazionale Milano and Club Brugge KV at Stadio San Siro on October 13, 2026 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Sommer rushed off his line to deny Andy Diouf at the near post, then could only watch as the Marcus Thuram angled drive flashed across the face of goal to skim the back post.
Another Diouf pull-back from the by-line saw Brandon Mechele charge down the Lautaro Martinez tap-in, but Tresoldi was unlucky not to put the Belgians in front from a corner when he smashed his finish against the crossbar.
Inter were made to pay for an excess of enthusiasm when Club Brugge broke from a corner with Carlos Forbs sprinting from his own box to the other penalty area, where he was brought down by Hakan Calhanoglu. Tresoldi converted the resulting penalty into the roof of the net, a special moment for the Italo-German lifelong Milan fan.

(Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Calhanoglu tried to make up for his error straight away, but fired one of his trademark efforts onto the crossbar.
Lautaro Martinez had the ball in the net on 36 minutes from a free kick, but was offside for the free header.
Jorne Spileers made a decisive block on Lautaro Martinez after Kyriani Sabbe was sold a dummy, and Bastoni’s header was smothered by Sommer on the resulting corner.
Lautaro Martinez did get the equaliser soon after, as Marcus Thuram surged down the left and laid it off for the Dimarco back-heel flick, where the Inter captain sold another dummy to turn a defender and sweep in from six yards. It was his first Champions League goal since November 2025.
MILAN, ITALY – OCTOBER 13: Lautaro Martinez of FC Internazionale Milano scores his team’s first goal during the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 League Phase MD2 match between FC Internazionale Milano and Club Brugge KV at Stadio San Siro on October 13, 2026 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Thuram fired over from the edge of the area, but Mechele suffered a very painful albeit entirely unintentional nose injury after a collision with Diouf.
Lautaro Martinez went clear on goal only to be denied by a desperate Sommer outstretched boot, then the follow-up was blocked by defenders.
Spileers had to be carried off injured after his brave sliding tackle on Dimarco, but Club Brugge restored their advantage as Inter were once again made to pay for individual errors.
Dimarco could not keep up with the pace of Forbs and Josep Martinez was caught in no man’s land, allowing Tresoldi to deposit into an empty net.
Club Brugge almost added another, as Virgili swung first-time from 12 yards to bounce off the inside of the near post, then Josep Martinez had to make a big save on Potts one-on-one.

(Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Tresoldi completed his dream hat-trick when pouncing on the rebound from another Josep Martinez save on the sprightly Forbs.
Inter have come back from 2-0 down to win several Serie A games this season and therefore felt belief when Sommer parried a Petar Sucic screamer into the path of Lautaro Martinez for 3-2.
However, Club Brugge added a fourth instead when Djed Spence’s wayward pass was intercepted by Forbs, who sent Romeo Vermant down the right to dink the finish over Josep Martinez.
It still wasn’t over, as Potts slipped on the Aleksandar Stankovic through ball, allowing Ange-Yoan Bonny to get down the left, cut inside and curl a right-foot finish into the far top corner, but that was scant consolation.

What happened
Club Brugge produced a major upset in the UEFA Champions League by beating Inter 4-3 away from home. Tresoldi was the star of the night with a hat-trick, dooming Inter and their coach Cristian Chivu to a damaging defeat. The loss compounds pressure on Chivu as Inter's European campaign takes an early hit. Club Brugge, meanwhile, will take enormous confidence from one of the most impressive results in their recent Champions League history.
Chance analysis
A 4-3 home defeat to Club Brugge is exactly the kind of result that shakes a Champions League campaign before it has truly begun. Tresoldi's hat-trick turns the Belgian side into one of the stories of the early matchdays and puts a clear spotlight on Cristian Chivu's project at Inter, where defensive fragility has now been exposed on the biggest stage. The result also signals that this season's Champions League remains wide open, with the seeded sides vulnerable to well-organized underdogs.
Inter suffer a damaging Champions League defeat that increases pressure on coach Chivu and raises questions about their defensive solidity; Club Brugge gain a major confidence boost and a statement result in Europe.
