Como director of sport Carlalberto Ludi confirms they are ‘at an advanced stage’ for Mattia Liberali, while Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is ‘a very strong player’ ahead of a new €35m bid.

The club was in Serie B just a couple of years ago, but is now preparing for the Champions League after a sensational fourth-place finish in Serie A, as well as reaching the Coppa Italia semi-final.

They are investing heavily in the squad to give coach Cesc Fabregas the resources he needs, and that also means signing more Italians to fit in with the necessary parameters.

“We are at a pretty advanced stage for Liberali. We want to sign him, he is an Italian talent, and we got him because we think he has the ideal characteristics to fit Cesc’s style of football.”

It was reported that although Milan had offered Liberali higher wages, he preferred to hold out for the opportunity to work with Fabregas at Como.

“Chalobah is a very strong player,” was the only comment that Ludi would make on the matter.

Not technically a new signing, Nico Paz was bought outright from Real Madrid after his two-year spell at a cost of €60m, although the Spanish giants have an option to buy him back for €80m next summer.

We aren’t yet ready for the Champions League, but we’ll roll our sleeves up to make sure we’re prepared when the time comes.”
