The press conference took place after a FIGC federal meeting, during which Malagò informed members that he had picked Mancini as the new head coach.
“Time is short, your curiosity as the media also pushed us to hurry, and I evaluated the person who should become the new coach of Italy is Roberto Mancini, for a whole list of reasons,” Malagò added.
“I take responsibility for those, but I want to clarify that this does not change the new culture and role of a technical director at Club Italia.

We already spoke on the phone, and tomorrow there will be a press conference with both Roberto Mancini and Claudio Ranieri at 18.00,” said the FIGC President.
Mancini already coached Italy from 2018 to 2023, winning Euro 2020, which was played in 2021, but also failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
He suddenly stepped down in August 2023, becoming the Saudi Arabia national team coach just a few weeks later.
A recent poll said that over 80% of people in Italy believe Mancini is not the right man for the job.
“Of course I took that into account,” Malagò concluded.
“I won’t say what he will talk about, but I assume he’ll discuss this in tomorrow’s press conference. I have taken all of this into consideration.”
