Brassier, who will take over Theate’s vacated No. 3 shirt following the Belgian's  loan move to Bologna , has signed a five-year deal running until summer 2031.

The 26-year-old made 161 Ligue 1 appearances across spells with Rennes, Marseille and Brest, and is a former France youth international.

"In Lilian Brassier, we have signed a physically strong and fast defender who tackles with great intensity whilst also possessing excellent dynamism," said Frankfurt board memeber for sport Markus Krösche. "We are convinced that Lilian will bring additional stability and quality to our defence and are delighted to welcome him to Eintracht Frankfurt."

What happened

Eintracht Frankfurt have completed the signing of French centre-back Lilian Brassier from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais. The 25-year-old arrives as a direct replacement for Arthur Theate, who left the club earlier in the window. Brassier previously spent time on loan at Brest and has Bundesliga experience, having featured for Borussia Mönchengladbach last season. Frankfurt are reshaping their defensive options ahead of the new campaign and see Brassier as a ready-made starter given his familiarity with German football.

Chance analysis

Frankfurt's defensive rebuild is the story here. With Theate gone, they needed a centre-back who could slot in immediately, and Brassier fits that profile after a full season in the Bundesliga with Gladbach. Rennes, meanwhile, continue to reshape their squad following a difficult campaign, recouping a fee for a player who never quite established himself in Brittany. For Frankfurt fans, the signing addresses the most pressing gap in the squad and signals intent to remain competitive in the upper half of the table.

Impact

Eintracht Frankfurt gain an experienced Bundesliga centre-back to fill the Theate-shaped hole in defence, while Rennes lose a squad player and recoup a transfer fee.
