Como have officially completed the purchase of defender Andres Cuenca from Barcelona, in a deal believed to be worth €0.5m plus a cut of the future sale fee, while Yannik Engelhardt goes to Freiburg.

The talented centre-back is a product of the Barcelona youth academy and was a key figure in the Spain squad that just won the European Under-19 Championship, after a six-month run on loan at Sporting Gijon.

He put pen to paper on a contract that will run until June 2030.

“He has enjoyed an important journey through the Blaugrana youth academy system and made his first-team debut in the UEFA Champions League.

“A modern defender, he is comfortable in possession and confident on the ball. We believe he can develop significantly as part of our project, and we are delighted to welcome him to Como.”

Como qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history and have been bolstering the squad with signings like Cruzeiro left-back Kaiki, Luis Milla from Getafe and Catanzaro midfielder Mattia Liberali.

“I’m really happy to be part of this club and I can’t wait to play my first match in this shirt,” Cuenca told the official Como website.

“My first impression has been very positive. Como is a beautiful city that has made a real impression on me, and everyone at the club has made me feel very welcome. I believe we’re in for a fantastic season and I’ll give my all every day to help the team achieve its goals.”

Meanwhile, Como have also agreed the €7m sale of midfielder Yannik Engelhardt to SC Freiburg.

What happened

Como have secured the signing of Cuenca, a 19-year-old talent from Barcelona's academy, in an official transfer. The move represents a notable acquisition for Como as they continue building their squad, while Barcelona loses a youth prospect from La Masia. Cuenca will look to develop further in Italian football after progressing through Barcelona's renowned youth system.

Chance analysis

Cuenca is a youth prospect rather than a first-team regular, so this transfer has limited impact on Barcelona's competitive squad depth. For Como, adding a talented young player from a top academy could provide long-term squad value, though Cuenca is unlikely to be an immediate game-changer in Serie A. The move is part of the broader trend of young Spanish prospects seeking first-team opportunities abroad.

Impact

Como gain a young developmental prospect; Barcelona lose a minor academy talent with no first-team impact.

AI Insight
