Mitaj ready for Genoa adventure Mario Mitaj poses with Genoa director of football Diego Lopez (genoacfc.it) “Arriving at a club like Genoa and in Serie A was an objective for me,” Mitaj told the club website.
“I am highly-motivated to show what I can do.”
He will wear the Number 2 jersey for the Grifone this season.
There had also been interest from Roma within Serie A, as well as a potential return to his old club AEK Athens in Greece, but Genoa managed to secure his signature.
Mitaj was already in the Italian city today and underwent his medical tests this afternoon, putting pen to paper on the contract this evening.
Despite his young age, he already has 32 senior caps for Albania and joined Al-Ittihad from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2024.
“Mario is a player who combines two important characteristics, namely technical quality to build out from the back, and the mental solidity required to play for Genoa,” Chief of Football Diego Lopez told the club website.

What happened
Genoa have officially announced the signing of Mario Mitaj from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. The agreement is worth up to €6.5 million, potentially including add-ons. Mitaj is a 22-year-old Albanian international left-back who previously played for Lokomotiv Moscow and is expected to bolster Genoa's defensive options. The move marks Genoa's latest reinforcement as they look to improve their position in Serie A.
Chance analysis
Genoa secure a relatively young and experienced left-back in Mitaj, who arrives from a competitive league in Saudi Arabia. At €6.5m, this is a moderate investment for Serie A standards, suggesting Genoa view him as a first-team option rather than a depth signing. This impacts Genoa's defensive structure and could affect the playing time of their existing left-backs.
Genoa's defense is strengthened with the addition of left-back Mitaj, potentially improving their defensive options for the remainder of the season.
Genoa have strengthened at left-back with a new signing, which could improve their defensive solidity but may not significantly impact upcoming match predictions in the short term.
