The Giallorossi did not disguise that he was the first choice to strengthen their attack after qualifying for the Champions League.
However, while they were prepared to perhaps pay even more than Fenerbahce ultimately did, they could not compete with the reported wages of €10m per season in Turkiye.

Greenwood also seemed to favour a move to Fenerbahce , holding negotiations with two different Presidential candidates, as Roma were unable to convince him.
While Atletico Madrid and some Saudi Pro League sides were also interested, the Englishman had made his decision some weeks ago.

What happened
Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United permanently, signing for Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahce in a deal worth €39m plus bonuses. The transfer was confirmed as official, ending a long-running saga that also involved Serie A side Roma, who were reported to be targeting the forward. Greenwood had been on loan at Getafe last season and was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. Fenerbahce win the race for his signature, adding a high-profile attacking option ahead of the new season.
Chance analysis
This is a significant transfer outcome for Fenerbahce, who secure a proven goalscorer with elite European pedigree for a relatively modest fee. For Roma, missing out on a primary target will force a pivot in their attacking recruitment. Manchester United, meanwhile, achieve a clean sale of a player whose future at the club had become untenable, recouping a meaningful fee. Greenwod's destination in Turkey rather than Italy or another top-five league could affect his international prospects and market perception going forward.
Fenerbahce gain a major attacking reinforcement for the Süper Lig season; Roma lose a key target and must seek alternatives; Manchester United finalize a permanent departure.
Fenerbahce's attack is significantly strengthened by Greenwood's arrival, while Roma will need alternative targets; this transfer does not directly affect Premier League or Serie A predictions but impacts Süper Lig title odds.
