It could not go on. Even at this early stage the sinking feeling was familiar and impossible to shake, and something had to give at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The first Bundesliga coaching change of the season is upon us just three games in, and it is not a major surprise that it is Eugen Polanski departing. Neither is it a shock that Gladbach are involved; after all, it was at exactly this point last season – three games in – that they parted ways with Gerardo Seoane.
A club with more prospects and direction would have chosen to move on from Polanski in the summer, but the reality is that Gladbach have few of either. Saturday afternoon’s humiliation at Freiburg – a club enjoying a 100% record, guided by poise and purpose, having spent the Johan Manzambi money wisely – was no bad day at the office but a season in microcosm. The home side cruised into a 2-0 lead inside the first half-hour before the Gladbach captain, Tim Kleindienst, was sent off for a second yellow card (after an utterly avoidable first one). What happened
Borussia Mönchengladbach have dismissed Eugen Polanski as head coach, making him the first managerial casualty of the new Bundesliga campaign. The decision comes amid a difficult start to the season for the Foals, who have failed to convert performances into points. Polanski's departure marks an early reset for a club that had hoped to build momentum from the previous campaign. The club will now begin the search for a successor as they look to arrest their slide down the table.
Chance analysis
Gladbach's decision to act so early in the season signals just how alarming their form has been under Polanski. Being the first Bundesliga club to pull the trigger on a head coach in a given season is rarely a vote of confidence in the squad or the sporting project, and it points to deeper structural concerns rather than a single bad run of results. The next appointment will be telling — whether the club goes for a steadying hand or a bold tactical reset will shape their identity for the rest of the campaign.
Gladbach face managerial instability heading into their next matches, with a new coach likely to be appointed and tactical adjustments expected.
