Federico Gatti in stoppages cancelled out the Alphadjo Cisse opener, as Juventus and Milan shared the spoils with decisive substitutes.

Both sides had started the season with back-to-back wins, even if performances weren’t entirely convincing. Juve missed Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, Weston McKennie, Andrea Cambiaso, Jeff Ekhator, Juan Cabal and deadline day signing Pape Matar Sarr, but giving first starts of the season to Nico Gonzalez and Kerim Alajbegovic.

Matteo Gabbia was ruled out for the Rossoneri with an ankle issue, but Adrien Rabiot and Luka Modric were ready to start after being eased back in post-World Cup, with Diego Moreira getting his debut.

(Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images) Nico Gonalez stung Mike Maignan’s gloves, as did Francisco Conceicao, with Manuel Locatelli sliding in unable to turn the rebound on target.

Francisco Conceicao ran onto a Douglas Luiz floated ball to again force a difficult save out of Maignan at the near post.

After the restart, a poor Randal Kolo Muani first touch failed to make the most of the smart Conceicao through ball, with two important Koni De Winter tackles.

Conceicao was easily the most dangerous Juventus player, his strike thumping the base of the upright on 55 minutes after Yunus Musah lost possession in midfield.

(Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images) Mario Gila was decisive with a tackle to stop Kolo Muani getting the shot away as he ran onto the Conceicao through ball, but it was Milan who took the lead with their first genuine chance.

Ruben Amorim’s substitutions proved crucial, as Samuel Chukwueze went on the counter-attack with a cross-field pass, Alphadjo Cisse controlled it dead, cut inside Manuel Locatelli, and drilled the finish through Pierre Kalulu’s legs into the far bottom corner with the right boot.

Juve had some complaints about the initial De Winter challenge on Kolo Muani to spark the move, but it was the first goal Milan scored in Serie A against Juventus since Olivier Giroud in May 2023.

(Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images) Nick Woltemade came on for his Bianconeri debut, and ballooned over on the half-volley when a Teun Koopmeiners free kick into the wall was put back into his path.

Jeremie Boga hit a snapshot straight at Maignan, but the equaliser came in stoppages when Koopmeiners whipped a cross from the left onto the head of Federico Gatti at the back post. The defender was expected to leave the Bianconeri this summer, but remained and made his mark. Curiously, Gatti had also scored against Amorim’s Sporting for Juventus.

What happened

In a Serie A fixture between Juventus and AC Milan, the visitors appeared poised for all three points after Cisse found the net. However, defender Federico Gatti struck late to level the score at 1-1, denying Milan what would have been a significant away victory. The draw leaves both teams with a point each, with implications for their respective league standings heading into the next round of fixtures.

Chance analysis

Federico Gatti's late intervention turned what looked like a statement away win for Milan into a shared result, underlining Juventus's knack for grinding out points even when they are not at their best. For Milan, the inability to close out a winnable match against a direct rival will sting, particularly given how Cisse's goal had given them the platform to climb the table. The result keeps the Serie A title and European qualification races finely balanced, with both clubs likely to feel they left something on the pitch.

Impact

A late Juventus equalizer prevented Milan from earning a crucial away win, impacting both teams' momentum in the Serie A standings.
