The SS Annunziata Hospital, where Yael Trepy is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, says the Cagliari starlet ‘remains under pharmacological sedation’ but has shown an ‘improvement in respiratory function compared with the severe respiratory failure detected upon his admission.’

Cagliari and the SS Annunziata Hospital of Sassari have provided a medical update on 20-year-old striker Trepy.

The Frenchman was  airlifted to the hospital on Sunday, August 16, following an incident at the swimming pool.

Official medical update on Cagliari striker Trepy “The young patient, Yael Trepy, is being treated in the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit of the SS Annunziata Hospital, remains under pharmacological sedation and is being mechanically ventilated through airway intubation, with an improvement in respiratory function compared with the severe respiratory failure detected upon his admission,” the hospital said on Tuesday morning via Cagliari’s official website.

“He is afebrile. Antibiotic therapy and microbiological investigations are ongoing. Cardiovascular function remains stable.

“Today, following a reassessment through radiological examinations and a lung ultrasound, and provided that the improvement in respiratory function is confirmed, a gradual reduction in sedation is planned, with subsequent assessment of the patient’s clinical response.

Trepy made his Serie A debut last season and has scored one goal in eight appearances in Italy’s top flight.

On Friday 14, just two days before the incident, he had started in a Coppa Italia match against Serie B side Arezzo, which Cagliari won 1-0.

Trepy played 54 minutes in that game.

Cagliari will make their 2026-27 Serie A debut away at Parma on Saturday, August 22, at 20:45 CET (19:45 BST).

What happened

Torino striker Pietro Pellegri, known as Trepy, was involved in a swimming pool incident that caused respiratory complications. The club has reported signs of improvement in his respiratory function, suggesting the situation is stabilizing. Details of the incident remain limited, but the player's condition appears to be progressing positively. His availability for upcoming fixtures will depend on the pace of his recovery.

Chance analysis

A respiratory-related health scare for a squad player like Pellegri is a low-to-medium concern from a competitive standpoint, given his limited starting role at Torino this season. However, any respiratory issue carries some fitness risk and could delay his return to training. Prediction systems should monitor his status ahead of Torino's next match but should not heavily weight his potential absence given his peripheral role.

Impact

Trepy's availability is uncertain in the short term due to respiratory recovery, but his limited role means minimal expected impact on Torino's performance.
