Yael Trepy has left the Intensive Care Unit after he nearly drowned in a pool, with coach Fabio Pisacane revealing ‘he was meant to start’ for Cagliari against Parma on Saturday.

The Sardinians kick off their Serie A season with a visit to the Stadio Tardini on Saturday at 19.45 UK time (20.45 CEST).

(Photo by Enrico Locci/Getty Images) Trepy had started upfront in the Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo a week ago, but during his weekend off, got into trouble in the deep end of the pool at a villa.

He was placed in an induced coma to help get the water out of his lungs, but is now making a rapid recovery, and has been moved out of the ICU at the Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Sassari.

The 20-year-old continues treatment and observation, while his teammates prepare to face Parma.

BOLOGNA, ITALY – MAY 03: Fabio Pisacane head coach of Cagliari Calcio during the Serie A match between Bologna FC 1909 and Cagliari Calcio at Renato Dall’Ara Stadium on May 03, 2026 in Bologna, Italy. (Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images) “It has certainly not been an easy week,” confessed coach Pisacane in a press conference.

“We had some terrible moments, but fortunately Yael woke up and it was the best news we could receive. He reminded us once again that life is the most important match of all.”

Trepy came through the Cagliari youth academy and had been ready to really make his mark this season.

“He would’ve been in the starting XI tomorrow, but obviously he can’t be with us now, so Daniele Maldini or Jacopo Fazzini can replace him.”

More problems that the Sardinians had to deal with include Sebastiano Esposito, who has been locked in a bitter battle of wills with the club hierarchy for several weeks.

“Esposito is not a player at our disposal, and I would prefer not to talk about him,” replied Pisacane.
