Monza 2-3 Udinese: Errors prove costly for Monza in Serie A defeat

Udinese made the most of Monza errors at both ends of the field, securing a morale-boosting 3-2 victory away including a Jurgen Ekkelenkamp scorcher.

The hosts needed to shake off a 4-1 opening day defeat to Inter, but were still missing injured Matteo Pessina, Patrick Ciurria, Leonardo Colombo and Idrissa Touré, though Patrick Cutrone returned. The Friulani managed to hold Como 1-1 in their first match , but it cost them injuries to Nicolò Zaniolo and Matteo Palma, joining Alessandro Zanoli and Giorgi Chakvetadze on the treatment table. At least Keinan Davis was back after a muscular issue to lead the attack.

Monza had a couple of big chances in quick succession just before the half-hour mark, as first Abankwah threw himself in the path of a Cutrone tap-in on the Kouadio assist, then Okoye made a desperate save on Samuele Birindelli’s header from a tricky angle.

However, it was Udinese who took the lead against the run of play when Mout gave it away in midfield, several attempts were charged down until Jakub Piotrowski was allowed too much time and space to sweep in from 12 yards.

(Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Monza did get their deserved equaliser when Colpani sprung the offside trap from an inspired Mangas pass and kept his cool to beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.

However, the hosts crumbled by conceding two goals in first half stoppages. Demba Thiam was at fault for the first, getting it all wrong on the Hassane Kamara snapshot from distance after a corner was cleared, letting the finish bend his gloves back.

He could in fairness do little against the second in very similar circumstances, as this time the corner fell to Jurgen Ekkelenkamp for a genuine screamer from the edge of the area.

(Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images) Udinese threatened again with Ekkelenkamp and Davis efforts, but Monza got back into it when Ebeneezer Akinsanmiro stood up a cross from the left for Gustavo Varela to steer the header in from seven yards, his second goal in as many Serie A games.

Monza tried to stage a late comeback, substitute Dany Mota Carvalho testing Okoye from the tightest of angles, but it wasn’t enough.
